Local Haiti rescue team returns home

A joint NYPD-FDNY rescue team returned home Sunday after spending a week in Haiti.

The task force was able to rescue six individuals from collapsed buildings in Port-au-Prince. Several Long Island residents were among the 80-person team that volunteered.

?Each area seemed like it was poorer than the next,? says Fire Chief Joe Downey, of West Islip. ?The people down there had very little to start with and now they have nothing; they were living in the street.?

Fellow FDNY and NYPD officers greeted the volunteers at the airport as they arrived home.
