Trial opens for ex-firefighter accused of arson

The trial of an ex-firefighter accused of torching a North Lawrence apartment building began Monday with the man?s lawyer pointing a finger at one of the victims.

Caleb Lacey is accused of setting the fire last February so he could put it out and be considered a hero.

Edit Vanegas and his two sons escaped, but his wife, daughters and stepson didn?t. Lacey?s lawyer says police should have investigated Vanegas because he was the last one in the building and first one out. He also says the couple had a violent relationship.

An alleged confession was tossed out but a judge is reconsidering after Lacey?s lawyer may have quoted it in court.
