Defense goes after N. Lawrence fire victim

A North Lawrence man took the stand Tuesday in the trial of the man accused of setting a fire that killed his wife, daughters and stepson.

The defendant?s lawyer continued to cast suspicion onto that man, Edit Vanegas, saying he could be in the country illegally, had a girlfriend and an order of protection against him.

?The fact that they have problems doesn't mean anything,? Yolanda Lopez, Vanegas? sister-in-law says. ?All couples have problems and it doesn't mean he lit the fire.?

Prosecutors say volunteer firefighter Caleb Lacey, 20, set fire to the stairwell of a North Lawrence apartment building so he could get accolades for extinguishing it.
