Officials: Rt. 25 safety measures on the way

Concerned Smithtown residents got word Wednesday their calls for safety measures on one very dangerous road may be heeded.

Eleven-year-old Courtney Sipes was struck and killed trying to cross Main Street in November. Weeks later, two more people were hit walking on the same stretch of road. Residents say they?ve been asking for safety improvements for years though.

Smithtown officials say they met with the state Department of Transportation last week and improvements could be coming soon to Route 25.

Such measures could include a pedestrian fence, countdown clocks at the crosswalks and a ?no turn on red? sign.
