Referendum sought on Suffolk energy tax

A Suffolk County legislator wants to throw power back to the people when it comes to the county?s energy tax.

Leg. Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches) is proposing a bill to let residents vote on whether to get rid of the 2.5 percent tax. The referendum would be on the November ballot.

A spokesperson for County Executive Steve Levy?s office said in a statement the office would support any fee reduction implemented with a corresponding budget cut.

Romaine says if he doesn?t get the bill through, he?ll consider collecting signatures to get the referendum on the ballot.
