Audit: $600K stolen from Lindenhurst S.D.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced Thursday a series of audits revealed that in 2007, a hacker transferred $600,000 out of the Lindenhurst School District's account at North Fork Bank.

The bank was eventually able to recover $500,000 of the $600,000, and the school district got the remaining $100,000 from an insurance company.

"This is obviously an issue we need to pay close attention to because those who try to hack these systems are very smart," DiNapoli says.

Lindenhurst School District officials say they have already taken steps to prevent future hacker attacks.

So far, no arrests have been made in the theft of the money.
