LIers given teary sendoff to Afghanistan

More than a dozen soldiers from New York will head to Afghanistan Monday.

Several Long Islanders were at a teary sendoff Sunday for the 455th Engineer Detachment, including 19-year-old Joseph Grimaldi. It's his first tour of duty.

"I'm a little scared. I'm a little nervous, but I'm very excited," the Hicksville native says.

Grimaldi's mother, Carin, says she's nervous about her son's deployment, but she is very proud.

The soldiers will spend the next 15 months building roads and airports in Afghanistan.
