Budget shortfall puts LI parks at risk

Officials are considering closing 10 Long Island parks to help a close a $29 million shortfall in the state budget.

The following parks are at risk of a shutdown: Hempstead Lake, Cold Spring Harbor, Trail View, Orient Beach, Brentwood, Heckscher, Valley Stream, Brookhaven, Caleb Smith and Nissequogue River.

Additional fees at other parks are also being eyed.

The list could possibly expand to include the Bethpage Picnic Area and Polo Fields and the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association. There is also a possibility all recreation programs and Independence Day fireworks could be eliminated.
