Congressmen, unions rally against LIRR cuts

LIRR union members were joined by some political heavyweights to rally against looming service and job cuts.

"Our message is very simple to the MTA," said Rep. Steve Israel. "We gave you the money - spend it on jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs!"

The rally was prompted by an MTA announcement it was cutting train service from Ronkonkoma to Greenport.

Another Long Island congressional representative warned they may respond to service cuts by slashing transportation grants.

"I've joined forces with people to fight for funds for the MTA, to fight for funds for east side access," said Rep. Tim Bishop. "I'm happy to do it, but I'm not happy to do it if my constituents are then disenfranchised."
