Water main break closes Massapequa street

A water main break in Massapequa shut down Merrick Road for hours Saturday, hurting local businesses.

The pipe ruptured on the corner of Unqua Road near the Parkview Nursing Home, where water had to be shut off.

Some businesses in the area say the water main break and road closure drove customers away and hurt their bottom line ahead of Valentine's Day.

"The customers who want to buy gift certificates aren't going to be able to get here," says Barbara Budd, of the Cactus Salon and Day Spa.

The water company Aqua New York says changes in temperature may have caused the 70-year-old pipes to burst.
