New Hyde Park man pleads not guilty to DWI

A judge entered a not guilty plea Thursday for the motorcyclist accused of driving drunk and killing a teenager on a highway.

James Ryan, of New Hyde Park, was charged with driving while intoxicated after he allegedly swerved off Wantagh Parkway and hit Matthew Scarpati, 19, of Dix Hills, last summer. Scarpati had been fixing a tire on the highway's bike path.

The defense says Ryan is not competent to stand trial due to a severe brain injury. The judge ordered prosecutors to have Ryan evaluated within the next month.

Ryan was released on his own recognizance back to the nursing home where he has been since the crash.
