West Babylon school destroyed by fire

A West Babylon elementary school was destroyed by a fire Thursday night, despite the efforts of firefighters to save it.

Officials say the fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. at the South Bay Elementary School. By midnight, the building was fully engulfed in flames.

Investigators say the fire started in the boiler room and that it doesn't appear to be suspicious. More than 200 firefighters battled the flames.

The school had been closed for winter break. The school superintendent says he will strive to keep all of the 318 students together when they return to class next week.

The superintendent says the school will hold a forum for parents on Sunday.
