Residents rally to keep Brentwood park open

Brentwood residents on Sunday protested plans to shutter a local park, part of a larger state plan to bridge an $8 billion deficit.

Brentwood State Park is one of 10 on Long Island that are on the chopping block, including Hempstead Lake, Cold Spring Harbor, Trail View, Orient Beach, Heckscher, Valley Stream, Brookhaven, Caleb Smith and Nissequogue River.

Gov. David Paterson issued a statement saying spending cuts, however difficult, are needed to put New York on the road to fiscal recovery.
