Mastic Beach taking steps to become village
Mastic Beach could be on its way to becoming its own incorporated village.
Residents debated a a petition for incorporation at public hearing Monday evening.
Mastic Beach has become a breeding ground for absentee landlords. It also has a higher than average foreclosure rate and a disproportionate concentration of sex offenders. Paul Breschard, a leader of the village movement, says the change would give residents more power to take back the neighborhood.
Those in opposition are concerned taxes would go up.
Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko has 10 days to decide if the petition is valid. If it is, an election could be held by April.
