Fire guts Riverhead Charter School classrooms

Classes at the Riverhead Charter School were canceled Wednesday after flames erupted at the school Tuesday night.

Dorothy Porteus, principal of the Calverton school, was in the building when the fire began after 5 p.m. She says three classrooms were severely damaged.

Porteus says the school is scrambling to find another location to hold classes for the school?s 235 children. She says the teachers will help ensure a smooth transition for students.
