Severe winter threatens dunes with erosion

The snowstorms that have pummeled the Island this winter have also caused severe erosion to local dunes.

At Smith Point County Park, beach-goers say rocks that are now visible are one sign of the severe erosion. Many visitors say they had never before seen the massive boulders.

Suffolk County officials say a plan is being formulated to replenish the sand on several beaches after the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the Island $41 million for work at Smith Point, Robert Moses and Jones Beach state parks.
