Jury selection begins in Marcelo Lucero murder

Jury selection began Tuesday in the case of a Suffolk teen accused of killing an Ecuadorian immigrant in 2008.

Jeffrey Conroy is one of seven teens police say terrorized Marcelo Lucero. Prosecutors say it was Conroy, 17, who fatally stabbed Lucero. He is charged with murder and manslaughter as hate crimes.

Four of the other teens have pleaded guilty in connection to the attack. At least one is already on the prosecution?s witness list.

Within 20 minutes, three of 16 prospective jurors were excused because they said they knew too much about the case.

Jury selection could take several days. The trial could last six to eight weeks.
