Suffolk County PD marks half a century

The Suffolk County Police Department marks its 50th birthday this year and is celebrating with yearlong festivities honoring the department?s origins.

The country?s second largest county department was formed in 1960 by voter approval. Western town police departments merged while the five East End towns opted to retain their independent forces.

Joe Oddo, retired Huntington town sergeant, was there from the beginning. He says it was years before foot patrol officers got handheld radios and that often the only way to call for backup was from a pay phone.

An official celebration is planned for May during National Police Week.
