Duo charged with hate crime for school attack

Two men have been charged for allegedly beating a student while shouting gay epithets in William Floyd High School.

Nashon Minter, 19, and Justin Higgins, 21, allegedly beat senior Jamel Dixon while shouting the slurs.

Minter and Higgins, both of Mastic, are charged with second-degree assault as a hate crime and are being held on $50,000 bond.

Higgins? mother blames the fight on Dixon, who she says was bullying her 14-year-old daughter. She says Minter and her son were defending the girl and that the fight had nothing to do with Dixon?s sexuality.

News 12 has learned there is surveillance video of the altercation.

The defendants are due back in court March 8.
