Mangano reveals plan to plug budget gap
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano is eyeing cuts in a number of areas in an effort to plug a nearly $50 million budget deficit.
Mangano's plan to fix what he calls a fiscal disaster includes eliminating hundreds of positions, cutting programs and slashing salaries.
The executive believes he can save $22 million by cutting positions that are paid for in the state budget, but currently unfilled. According to Mangano, 350 jobs have already been eliminated.
Other positions may not disappear, but will have drastically reduced compensation - in one case turning the $130,000-per-year job of assessment review commission vice chairman into a part-time position only paying $15,000.
Mangano also believes he can save $6 million by cutting county programs, but says he still has to determine which ones.
