Hempstead fire chief faces charges after arrest

Hempstead Fire Chief Michael Charles is facing charges after authorities say he and two other men stopped and searched a man while armed.

Police say Charles "appeared to have a handgun in a holster on his hip" while another man, Brian Schuck, allegedly pointed a shotgun at the victim on Sunday. Schuck, who is from Freeport, is a firefighter with the FDNY and also a volunteer with the Hempstead Fire Department.

Charles and Schuck have been charged with menacing and possession of dangerous weapons.

The FDNY says Schuck, who is facing additional charges in an unrelated incident, has been suspended without pay.
