Levy looks to GOP for gubernatorial backing

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy met with state Republican leaders Tuesday to try to win their support for a gubernatorial run.

Levy, who is a Democrat, says his commitment to keeping taxes and spending under control make him an ideal candidate to represent the GOP.

Currently, former Rep. Rick Lazio has the Republican Party's support in his possible run for governor. Levy says he remains hopeful Republicans will see he has what it takes to prevent statewide bankruptcy.

The party's official nomination will be announced later in the spring. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is the likely Democratic Party candidate.
