22 teachers to be let go in Lindenhurst
Nearly two dozen teachers are being laid off in the Lindenhurst School District and other districts could be next.
School officials announced the layoffs Wednesday at a special budget workshop. The move comes after Gov. David Paterson said he wanted to cut education funding by $1.1 billion, which means $3.5 million less for the Lindenhurst School District.
The district is implementing a plan that could result in 62 teacher layoffs and program cuts.
Suffolk County Superintendents Association President Wendell Chu says the county could lose up to 1,000 positions. The William Floyd and Brentwood school districts say they may send out pink slips too.
