Meeting held over violence at Hempstead H.S.

Some 200 students and parents met with Hempstead school officials Saturday to discuss a recent rash of violence at Hempstead High School.

A near-riot broke out at the school Monday, leaving nine students injured and causing the cancellation of classes. On Friday, another fight erupted at lunchtime, prompting administrators to end the day early again.

"None of you walk the halls at Hempstead High School," said student Shanita Ray. "You have no idea how scary it is."

In an effort to bring order to Hempstead High School, Superintendent Patricia Watkins announced plans to open an alternative school in Hempstead Village for students with behavioral problems.
