Cops: School custodian was selling heroin

A long-time custodian for the North Merrick School District has been arrested for allegedly selling heroin.

Police say Joseph Latona, 27, was seen Tuesday afternoon selling the drug blocks away from both Camp Avenue Elementary School and Old Mill Road Elementary School, where he has worked.

Authorities say Latona fled when they tried to arrest him, but he later surrendered in front of his home. They say he had 60 bags of heroin on him.

Latona is charged with sale and possession of a controlled substance. He has been suspended from his job without pay.

Police say they don?t believe Latona sold drugs on campus, but they are investigating.
