Immigrant murder trial gets under way

Opening statements began Thursday morning in the trial of the Medford teenager accused in the 2008 stabbing death of an Ecuadorian immigrant.

Suffolk prosecutors told jurors about the night 19-year-old Jeffery Conroy allegedly plunged the knife into 37-year-old Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue. They told jurors Conroy and his friends went out looking to harm Hispanics.

Defense attorney William Keahon told the jurors to put aside what they?ve heard about the case in the media when listening to the evidence.

Conroy and six of his friends were arrested in connection to the murder. Four have pleaded guilty and could testify against Conroy, who is charged with murder and manslaughter as a hate crime.
