Police: Critical Deer Park baby shaken by aunt

Suffolk police say an 11-month-old girl from Deer Park is in critical condition after being shaken by her aunt.

Paola Velez, 22, has been arrested and charged with reckless assault of a child. Velez had been enlisted to baby-sit while the child's mother was at work, police say. Investigators believe Velez shook her niece because she was crying.

Authorities say Velez rushed the unresponsive child, who was bleeding from the mouth, to the emergency room at 9 a.m. Wednesday and claimed the girl had fallen off a swing set.

The medical staff alerted police after deciding the girl's injuries looked suspicious.
