Joanna Bird's family suing Nassau police

The family of Joanna Bird will announce a wrongful death lawsuit against Nassau police Friday, exactly one year after the mother of two was killed.

Bird was fatally stabbed, allegedly by ex-boyfriend Leonardo Valdez-Cruz, who is awaiting trial on murder charges.

Bird?s family argues Nassau police failed to protect Joanna from Valdez-Cruz in the days leading up to her death. Valdez-Cruz should have been arrested for violating an order of protection, the family says.

The death prompted an internal affairs investigation into nine police officers. Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey admits the department could have done a better job.
