Nassau PD sued over Joanna Bird's death

The family of Joanna Bird announced a wrongful death lawsuit against the Nassau Police Department Friday, one year after the woman was killed.

Bird's family claims police failed to protect the mother of two from ex-boyfriend Leonardo Valdez-Cruz in the days before he allegedly stabbed her to death.

The suit asks for $280 million. It claims cops could have saved Bird if they had arrested Valdez-Cruz for violating her order of protection numerous times before the killing.

Police have said they failed in the Bird case and are investigating if officers followed department policy.
