Boy dies after near-strangling in blinds

A Holtsville 2-year-old who was rushed to the hospital after he reportedly became strangled in the cord of a set of blinds died Saturday.

Brendan McCarthy was at home playing with his 4-year-old brother when his neck became tangled in the chains of a window blind Friday.

Police say the child's father, a corrections officer, performed CPR before responders arrived. Emergency workers were able to get a pulse before transporting the boy to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
