Cop: Hate crime suspect admitted stabbing

(AP) - A police officer says the teenagercharged with fatally stabbing an Ecuadorean immigrant admitted thathe was responsible for the killing.

Suffolk County Police Officer Michael Richardsen testified atthe murder trial of Jeffrey Conroy on Monday in Suffolk CountyCourt in Riverhead. He described his conversation with Conroy on aPatchogue street corner moments after Marcelo Lucero had been stabbed.

Conroy is one of seven Long Island teenagers implicated in theLucero's death. But he is the only one of the seven beingprosecuted on charges of murder and manslaughter as a hate crime.

Prosecutors say Conroy is the one who actually stabbed Lucero.He has pleaded not guilty and is the first to face trial; four ofhis co-defendants have pleaded guilty to hate crime-relatedcharges.
