Levy facing uphill battle for GOP nomination

State Republican leaders welcomed Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy into their party with open arms last week, but over the weekend Conservatives picked their candidate ? and it wasn?t him.

Levy announced Friday he was switching parties to enter the gubernatorial race. On Saturday, the Conservative Party endorsed former Rep. Rick Lazio.

A new Siena College poll found Lazio leading Levy among Republicans statewide 45 to 16 percent. Levy?s camp says his numbers are low because his candidacy is so new.

Hofstra University political analyst Larry Levy agrees.

The poll also showed both Lazio and Levy losing to presumed Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo.
