Sentencing of LI rapist postponed until April

The court date for the man convicted of rape in 1981 was postponed Friday morning.

The Nassau County Police Department reported Thursday the arrest of Rudy Carter, 64, of Roselle, N.J., at a hotel in New Jersey. Authorities say they investigated his Social Security number and were able to obtain several last known addresses in the New Jersey and Carolina areas.

According to investigators, Carter disappeared the day before he was to be sentenced and left the Long Island area 29 years ago. He was initially arrested in 1979. Carter was charged with and convicted of forcibly raping and sexually abusing a woman in Lakeview.

According to police, he used various aliases to elude capture.

Carter was to face a judge Friday morning in Mineola. He will remain behind bars in Nassau County until his next court date in April.
