Sand replenishment under way at Gilgo Beach

? State park officials began piling up sand on the south side of Ocean Parkway at Gilgo Beach Friday.

The beach was torn apart by the last few storms and is vulnerable to further erosion. Sand is being placed where the distance between the road and the high water mark is 60 feet or less.

Officials acknowledge the sand replenishment is only a temporary fix, but they say it is necessary. "If we don't do anything we could lose whatever roadway we have left,? New York State Parks Deputy Regional Director George Gorman says. ?We can't afford to do that.?

Officials are bracing for another storm Monday.
