Charges upgraded in fatal hit-and-run

Charges were upgraded Monday to manslaughter against a Stony Brook woman accused in a deadly hit-and-run.

Police say Maureen Lambert hit 11-year-old Courtney Sipes as she crossed East Main Street in Smithtown last year. Lambert was originally charged with leaving the scene, but now faces seven new charges including second-degree manslaughter.

The original charge was upgraded after prosecutors say they were told by Lambert?s friend that she did heroin an hour before the November crash.
