Poll: 50 percent want Lighthouse Project as is

Town of Hempstead officials are moving forward on a scaled-down version of the Lighthouse Project while just 15 percent of Long Islanders say they want it, according to a new poll.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray promised to fast-track the debate over the $3 billion massive redevelopment project almost two months ago. The town says it has hired a consultant to help pitch a smaller development plan, but would not give details.

Meanwhile, 50 percent of respondents to a News 12 Long Island/Hofstra University Poll say they support the bigger plan already proposed. Twenty-three percent are against that plan.

The town says it hope to make its plan public by the end of the summer.
