Police: CA man absconded with Rocky Point girl

Police halted a train in Rochester Friday night to intercept a 22-year-old California man who allegedly absconded with a 13-year-old Rocky Point girl he met online.

Authorities say John Vertrees, of Sacramento, was hauled off a western-bound Amtrak train at around 11 p.m. and charged with unlawful imprisonment.

Police also took the girl into custody. She was reunited with her family Saturday morning.

Suffolk County police say Vertrees started the online relationship with the minor Jan.17. On Wednesday, he traveled to Rocky Point and had an encounter with the girl, according to police.

Two days later, police say the girl left her home with Vertrees in a taxi heading to Penn Station.

Suffolk police say they will charge Vertrees with endangering the welfare of a child when he's transferred to Long Island.
