Jury selection starts in Joanna Bird murder trial

Jury selection in the murder trial of the man accused of killing Joanna Bird began Monday.

Leonardo Valdez-Cruz has maintained his innocence for the past year. He is accused of fatally stabbing Bird, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, inside her home.

Bird?s family has accused Nassau police and prosecutors of failing to protect Joanna because she had an order of protection against Valdez-Cruz prior to her death. Bird?s mother Sharon Dorsett is suing both of those parties.

The trial is expected to last up to six weeks. If convicted of first-degree murder, Valdez-Cruz would face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
