Students upset over possible teacher layoffs
The Central Islip school board announced possible teacher layoffs and program cuts at a Tuesday night budget meeting due to financial troubles because of the cuts to state aid.
Parents, teachers and students showed up to the meeting and urged the school board to re-consider the cuts because of how it would affect the students. Parents say the program eliminations will make their children vulnerable to escalating gang violence in the area.
Parents and students were devastated to hear 111 teaching and support staff jobs are in jeopardy. Additionally, the music department, alternative high school for at risk students school, pre-kindergarten and sports program could be on the chopping block.
A final version of the budget will be presented for residents' consideration May 18.
