Mangano pen stroke ends annual assessments

? Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano signed two executive orders Wednesday addressing the county?s property tax assessment system.

Under the first order, commercial property owners grieving their assessment must obtain and produce certified appraisal to the county to ensure their property is properly assessed.

The second order will stop the county?s annual assessment system and replace it with a four-year cyclical system that begins in 2011.

The county executive says these changes will ensure the county fixes assessment mistakes beforehand, instead of paying out refunds later. Ultimately, he says they will save Nassau money.

County Democrats say they are wondering whether the move is legal.
