12 alleged LI gang members arraigned

? Twelve alleged members and associates of La Mara Salvatrucha, or the MS-13 street gang, were arraigned in Central Islip yesterday.

The members were arraigned on federal criminal charges, including murder, assault with dangerous weapons, assaulting resulting in serious bodily injury, witness tampering, firearm offenses and conspiracy.

Five additional defendants named in the indictment were arraigned earlier this week. Four of the defendants are charged with the March 6 execution-style murder of Nestor Moreno, a security guard at El Rancho Bar and Grill in Hempstead.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey says tips to the Crime Stoppers hotline were invaluable to the investigation. The police department gave out a record $10,000 to tipsters whose information led to an arrest, according to Mulvey.
