Major NY insurer raising health care premiums
Thousands of Long Island?s public employees are about to see their health insurance premiums increase dramatically.
The New York State Health Insurance Plan recently announced it is raising premiums 13 to 22.5 percent. The plan covers 1.2 million government workers around the state, including more than 13,000 in Nassau County.
Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos says taxpayers on the Island may ultimately have to pay for that increase in terms of higher town, village and school taxes.
The comptroller says NYSHIP is squeezing in the increase before a federal regulations board charged with keeping insurance rates in check is put into place. The panel is part of the federal health care legislation recently signed into law.
