Rally held over trailer for sex offenders
Some Riverhead residents protested yesterday in the Suffolk County Jail parking lot to demand the removal of a trailer filled with more than a dozen homeless sex offenders.
Proposals have been made to scatter housing for homeless sex offenders throughout the county instead of concentrating it in Riverhead and Westhampton. The Town of Riverhead has sued the county over the issue.
The county has set up a voucher plan that gives homeless sex offenders $90 a day to stay in hotels, but the Suffolk presiding officer says it's not cost-effective.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy signed legislation last month requiring homeless sex offenders who receive the vouchers to wear tracking devices.
