Schiavo sentenced to 25 years to life

A Medford man who admitted to killing a Bellport woman last year was sentenced to 25 years to life behind bars yesterday.

Robert Schiavo had pleaded guilty to killing 61-year-old Nancy McKinley in March 2009. He says he broke into McKinley's home while she was sleeping and fatally stabbed her after panicking when she woke up.

McKinley was the wife of U.S. diplomat Brunson McKinley. He delivered an emotional victim impact statement in court and said the family is satisfied with the verdict.

Schiavo will be eligible for parole after 24 years.
