Police probe fatal Roslyn Heights hit-and-run

Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in Roslyn Heights yesterday evening.

According to police, 81-year-old Vagher Giae was struck on Warner Avenue by a light-colored SUV around 5 p.m. Police say the woman was using a cane to cross the street when the vehicle ran a stop sign and struck her. Cops say the vehicle then swerved and sideswiped another car.

Officials say the impact sent Giae flying about 50 feet.

Neighbors say drivers often run through stop signs. Police say they plan to increase traffic enforcement in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
