Cabbie to testify in Bird murder trial

A taxi driver is set to take the witness stand today in the trial of a man accused of murdering New Cassel mother Joanna Bird last March.

Prosecutors claim Bird's ex-boyfriend, Leonardo Valdez-Cruz, tortured and stabbed to death the 24-year-old woman in a jealous rage despite an order of protection.

Today, the cab driver who drove Valdez-Cruz to the Bronx after Bird was found murdered will testify.

The jury is also expected to hear from Bird's friends and co-workers.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Valdez-Cruz could face a life sentence.
