LI gang member faces jail time for baseball bat attack

A Hempstead man who officials say is a member of Salvadorans With Pride (SWP), a violent street gang, has been convicted of assault charges for beating a man he mistakenly thought was a member of a rival gang.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said it took a jury less than four hours to convict Hector Guevara, 24, of second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Rice said Guevara was a passenger in a car last August that arrived at El Pacifico Bar and Restaurant on Franklin Avenue in Hempstead. She says Guevara mistook a man smoking outside the bar as a member of MS-13, a rival of SWP, because he was wearing blue and white, MS-13's colors.

After taunting the man, Rice says Guevara got out of the car and beat the man in the forearms and head with an aluminum baseball bat. The victim, who is not affiliated with any gang, suffered multiple bruises and a laceration on the side of his head that required stitches.

Guevara faces up to seven years in prison when he is sentenced May 17.
