LIRR 3rd track delayed due to deficit woes

The MTA announced the delay of its project to build a third track between Bellerose and Ronkonkoma yesterday.

The multi-year, multimillion-dollar plan is being pared back to help the MTA balance its current estimated $400 million deficit and an anticipated deficit later this year of another $400 million.

MTA Chairman Jay Walder announced that $2 billion is being cut from projects, including the third track project.

The third track would have widened the railroad's right of way in western Nassau and allowed the LIRR to increase the volume of its passenger trains. The plan also involves condemning dozens of properties and years of construction pains, to the objection of many towns.

Many western Nassau residents are calling the delay a victory.
