Prosecution rests case against Valdez-Cruz

The prosecution rested its case against Leonardo Valdez-Cruz yesterday in the death of New Cassel mom Joanna Bird.

Prosecutors played phone calls Valdez-Cruz allegedly made to Bird from his jail cell in October 2008. At the time, Valdez-Cruz was imprisoned at the Nassau County Correctional Center.

During one call, Valdez-Cruz is heard saying, "When you go out tonight, I hope you [expletive] die."

Valdez-Cruz is accused of fatally stabbing Bird, his ex-girlfriend, in a jealous rage after months of threatening her. He is charged with first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
