Teens fight to maintain roadside memorial

Some Farmingdale teens are fighting to maintain a memorial to their friend who died in a car crash on Main Street last year.

The teens and family members decorated a utility pole with signs, pictures and stuffed animals to honor 19-year-old Kaitlin Krokowsi, who died after crashing her car into the pole in January 2009.

Village officials say the roadside memorial is not violating any codes, but some residents have complained that it is a distraction. As a compromise, the village offered to install a permanent bench in Krokowski's memory.

Krokowski's family and friends are considering the bench, but hope to maintain the pole memorial.
